In nature many coral reef fish feed almost constantly throughout the daylight period either picking from surfaces, predating on corals or feeding on particles direct from the water column. Many species such as Wrasses, Anthius, Butterfly fish, Angelfish, Tangs and chromis to name a few, have exceptionally high metabolisms which means they are almost constantly feeding to counteract the large amounts of energy used up in courtship, mating and maintaining position in strong currents. Maintaining fish within these categories in captivity long term usually requires the keeper to factor in the need for several feeds per day, rather than a single bulk feed in the evening.
