Carbonate and hydrogen carbonate ions are used by calcifying organisms, such as corals and coralline algae, in order to form the calcium carbonate of their rigid structures. It is therefore vital that these ions are regularly added to reef aquariums. ALKAREEF+ contains carbonate ions to maintain your aquarium at its optimum alkalinity level. It works with CALCIREEF+, a calcium hydro-gel that slowly releases hydrogen carbonate ions into the water.
